Free Bird

Well the inevitable happened...laid off. I'm filled with mixed emotions about it. A big part of me is relieved it finally happened and the other part is thinking what do I do next? Right now i'm on vacation until the cruise Woo! I get 2 more paychecks, vacation pay, my severance, and my pension so I should be okay for a bit.

My husband is supporting me in going back to school and getting a degree is something new. I have a travel and hospitality certificate and an assoicate's in business. I'm not interested in either of those. I'm thinking medical coding or criminal justice LOL! I'm sure i'll go with the medical but doesn't everyone want to be a CSI agent ;) I just want to go to a school where I get my degree FAST and get a job FAST. My husband on the other hand is talking to his mom who thinks things should be done slow and that i'm trained properly and then I get a better job. Well you know how you live and learn and i've learned that listening to older people is the way to go. So i'll keep you all posted on what's happening. If you have a job and love it feel free to chyme in your opinions please! I know Em loves hers but I don't think I could do the massage thing. Training is not an interest of mine either. I have thought of the nutrition field but really medical will always be around unless Obama screws up more.

I did get up and get my early cardio in this morning. I'm gonna do my best to keep Tony around. I may not be able to compete as much as I would have liked to this year but we'll just see what happens.

To make things worse my Grandpa Bailey has cancer. He's 83 and my mom, aunt and uncles have decided just to let him live his life without treatments. He is an active older man and being couped up in a hospital during the spring and summer would not be his thing. Plus, my Grandpa Hommel has been in and out of the hospital this past week as well. He's getting dillusional and sees things. It's sort of funny really but then again it's not. He's 97 though!!! Life sucks sometimes but you just keep on going.

I think everything happens for a reason and God will do what he wants with me.

Hey there, April... I was laid off once way back in 1994. At the time I thought it was the end of the world. It ended up being the best thing that could have happened for me because I re-trained myself also. Back then, I went into web design and I had more work than I could handle.

So I'm sure that if you take your time and look around at what you enjoy plus what's booming (or will be booming) - you will have the same experience that I did.

Luckily - you don't have children so you don't have that extra added pressure. I didn't either and I think I took about six months off to "figure it out."

Best of luck to you!

First...sorry about your Grandpa!!!

As for the job...Hmmmmmm....
Cleaning houses is a great job! Work for yourself, flexible schedule, wonderful clients, great pay...what's not to love??? Well, maybe the scrubbing toilets and floors part, but other than that...LOL. J/K...most people would not do well at my job.

Enjoy your vacation!!!

=)

I think this is a great opportunity for you. If YOU hear of any great jobs, let me know. lol I'm sorry to hear about your grandpas. It sounds like they both have lived long lives. I'll keep you and your family in my prayers. (((HUGS)))

Enjoy the break and the opportunity. And I'd totally be a CSI with you. ;)

I agree with the girls. It sucks now because the future is not gauranteed and that in itself is scary, but it could be a really good thing for you. I have been looking at irons to put in the fire as far as careers go myself, and maybe this is a good time for you to reinvent yourself. You have a hubby who loves and supports you - now is the time~Keep us posted.

As far as your grandpas go, they have both been able to live long and healthy lives up to this point. You are blessed!

When God closes a door, he opens a window right? Fly out free bird!

You could be a nurse in 2 years. Dont bother with LPN, go straight for RN if you are interested. It is VERY HARD but overall, I dont regret my decision. The only thing I would have done different is went to school longer. I too wanted a degree fast and a job fast. I wish I had went to pharmacy school or became an optometrist like I wanted to in the first place.

Just take your time and REALLY figure out what it is you WANT to do every day of your life for the next 50 years.

So very sorry about your grandpa. I know that is very hard. Your family will be in my prayers.

April,

Sorry to hear about your grandpa.

Do something you love! I NEVER in a million years thought I would be a stay at home mom...and be sewing and selling dog toys LOL. My degree is in supervision..so I guess I'm supervising my kiddos! LOL
But I agree, take your time find a passion and go with it!

God sure does have a plan! We just have to listen and trust him!
Have fun in your search!

Apirl -So sorry about your Grandpa, will say a little prayer for him and your family! Also can understand how you may be feeling about being laid off.......it has happened to me before and it can be a scary time not knowing what the future may hold but understand that when one door closes another one always opens and in my experience I've always landed in a better place that fit my life and family needs much better!

Take Care,

Lisa T.

Hey girl...I've already said more than enough I know! But I agree, take things slow...really think about where you want to go...things happen for a reason...this is life kicking you in the butt to do what you already knew you had to do :) There are so many things you could do...I say find something you are passionate about and find a way to make money at it :) Mike can take care of the rest :)

I'm really sorry to hear about your Grandpa.. :(

I try to think like you do in that sometimes things happen for a reason, and perhaps this really is the opportunity for you to go out and get a degree in something you love. You'll probably get tons of advice and suggestions from friends and family, but the important thing is that you follow your heart and do what YOU want to do and not what everyone else tells you to do. I say that only because that's what I did when I went to college and if I could go back and do it all over again I would not have gone the route I did.

Good luck - you'll do great no matter what. Enjoy your vacation!! :)

Hi April..I am so sorry to hear about your Grandpa. My prayers are with you and your family.
Also sorry to hear about your job. I lost mine last July and even though I knew it was coming it still felt weird not to be part of something I did for over 20 years. This is a great oppourtunity for you. You are so young and you have the chance now to do anything you want! I am looking for something to do too when my son goes back to school.
Enjoy this time and your vacation and don't rush into anything.
I feel bad that we did not get to meet at the Arnold. There is next year and for sure will not let that happen again!! Really looking foward to meeting you.

I hate to throw out the old "it all happens for a reason" but its what I truly believe. You will come out of this situation having taken a great new path, one that you likely never would have ventured down if you hadn't lost your job. It all works out in the end, but I hope its speedy for you!! I'm so sorry to hear about your grandpa, you are in my thoughts!!
